Nigeria: Award-Winning Film Lands Director in Jail

The first time I visited award-winning Northern Nigerian filmmaker Hamisu Lamido Iyan-Tama in prison, a week after his arrest, the former Kano State gubernatorial candidate seemed to be in high spirits. Dressed immaculately in a crisp dogon riga, the only physical sign that he was in prison was his rubber slippers. He joked with the friendly prison guards, greeted each visitor by name, and narrated how in December 2008, a mobile court justice had sentenced him to three months in prison and (...) read

Ahmed to challenge ’press offences’

Makram Mohamed Ahmed, newly elected Egyptian Journalists Syndicate chairman, has promised to pursue the syndicate’s longstanding goal of outlawing the practice of issuing jail terms for so-called "publication offences". "The legality of sentencing journalists to prison remains the biggest challenge to Egyptian journalism," Ali Hashem, former Journalists Syndicate secretary-general, told IPS. "The practice will never be done away with in the absence of a strong syndicate leadership capable (...) read

Women and Philippine media : at the fringes of freedom

Where are women located in the struggle for freedoms to express, create and disseminate information through ICTs as media ? Censorship comes in multiple forms in the Philippines. The Growing Threat of Soft Censorship

> Open Society Justice Initiative, 12 December 2005

http://www.soros.org/initiatives/jus (...)

This paper examines the indirect restrictions on freedom of expression worldwide. This style of censorship-not entirely new, but increasingly employed around the world-is subtle, indirect, and sophisticated.1 To control critical voices, it prefers to inflict financial pain, manipulate regulatory leverage or act under the disguise of the law-as opposed to the more “traditional” methods of beating and arbitrarily detaining journalists, or burning down media houses. Not even established democracies are immune to this syndrome: the Bush administration has reportedly paid journalists to plant covert propaganda pieces, in both United States and Iraqi media.  read

False Freedom: Online Censorship in the Middle East and North Africa

> November 2005, Human Rights Watch

http://hrw.org/reports/2005/mena1105 (...)

This 144-page report documents online censorship and cases in which Internet users have been detained for their online activities in countries across the region, including Tunisia, Iran, Syria and Egypt. These attempts to control the flow of information online contradict governments’ national and international legal commitments to freedom of opinion and expression and the summit’s own Declaration of Principles. The report is based on an examination of thousands of Web sites from Middle Eastern countries and interviews with dozens of writers, bloggers, computer experts and human rights activists.  read
