Peru approves ‘historic’ indigenous rights law

On Tuesday night, Peru’s Congress unanimously approved a ‘historic’ new law that guarantees indigenous people’s right to free, prior and informed consent to any projects affecting them and their lands. European Commission expected to approve seven certification schemes for biofules without public scrutiny

The European Commission is expected to tomorrow (19/7/11) release the names of seven voluntary certification schemes approved to certify biofuels according to the ‘sustainability criteria’ set out in the Renewable Energy Directive. This follows a lawsuit filed by environmental law organisation ClientEarth, Friends of the Earth Europe (FOEE), FERN and Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) against the Commission’s refusal to provide access to information regarding the approval of such schemes. (...) read

Jury of Indian farmers to pass judgement on agricultural science

A ’citizens jury’ of marginalised farmers in southern India will this week give their verdict on the future of research on food and agriculture. From 1-5 December, the jury will hear the testimony of special witnesses from government departments, agricultural universities, and farmers and consumers organisations.
