Sabrang Communications

Sabrang Communications ("sabrang" means "all colours") was started in 1993 to provide information on, analyse and expose the machinations of communal politics in India, on the subcontinent and abroad and to publicise the attempt of secular individuals, groups and organisations engaged in fighting them. We stand for equal respect to all religions but are opposed to the cynical manipulation of faith in the pursuit of power. Therefore we are opposed to both majority and minority communalism. Sabrang publishes the magazine "Communalism Combat" and they have an online archive on Social Conflicts (Communal, Caste, Gender, Ethnic, Identities), Human Rights & Peace Initiatives in India.

TAPOL

TAPOL, which means « political prisoner » in Indonesian, is a leading English language authority on the human rights situation in Indonesia and East Timor. It produces the TAPOL Bulletin, available online as well as occasional reports and briefing papers.

TAPOL’s initial purpose was to campaign for the release of hundreds of thousands of political prisoners, mostly jailed without trial, who had been held as communist suspects after an anti-communist crackdown in 1965. But it soon broadened its campaign to include students arrested in 1974 and 1978. In August 1975, TAPOL warned that an Indonesian invasion of East Timor would bring bloodshed and terror. The invasion, which brought both, occurred four months later.

TAPOL has campaigned against economic aid and arms exports to Indonesia, as well as human rights abuses such as press censorship. During the 1980’s the TAPOL Bulletin published many detailed interviews with West Papuan resistance leaders, East Timorese victims of abuse and Indonesian human rights activists. It also started making representations on a variety of issues to UN human rights bodies. Apart from the Bulletin and Occasional Reports, TAPOL has published books including :

  • An Act of Genocide : Indonesia’s Invasion of East Timor (1979)
  • West Papua : the obliteration of a people (1983)
  • Indonesia : Muslims on Trial (1984)

The permanent peoples’ tribunal

The Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal: Second Session on the Philippines is a major part of the campaign of the Filipino people to expose, condemn and fight the crimes of the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo regime and its principal foreign accomplice. The United States, particularly the Bush administration, is the force behind the intensification of exploitation and oppression of the Filipino people as well as the peoples of the world.

In recognition of the urgency of the appeal of the Initiating Group of Philippine organizations, the Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal has decided to convene the Second Session on the Philippines. It shall hear and deliberate on the indictment against the Arroyo regime, the US government and multilateral agencies acting as their accomplices, in violating the Filipino people’s individual and collective rights, and for crimes under international law.
