BAKAN Joel

The Corporation : The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power

> 2004, Viking Canada, 228 p., $14.99 CAD

Using the World Health Organization’s checklist for personality types, Joel Bakan underlines the psychopathic personality of corporations: callous unconcern for the feelings of others; incapacity to maintain enduring relationships; reckless disregard for the safety of others; pattern of deceitfulness; incapacity to experience guilt; failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviour. In sum, a corporation is, in the words of prominent investor and shareholder activist Robert Monks, "a doom machine... in our search for wealth and for prosperity we created a thing that is going to destroy us."

The New Media Monopoly

> 20th anniversary Edition, Boston, Beacon Press, 2004, 299 pp.

“It would have been difficult to imagine in 1983 that the corporations that owned all the country’s dominant mass media would, in less than 20 years, shrink from 50 separate companies.” This new edition of a twenty-year-old classic on corporate control of the media explores the political implications of this astonishing shift, the impact of the Internet and other new telecommunication tools and the effects of corporate media control on the news and entertainment served to Americans.
